The mechanical engineer, inventor and author John Lawrence Hodgson (1881-1936), received his education at the University of Nottingham. He specialized in measurement apparatuses and instruments and held 51 patents. Keenly interested in aviation, he obtained his flying licence in 1917. Married to suffragette Joan Wickham. For some years he worked in South Africa where the couple met Olive Schreiner and other personalities. The novel envisions Hodgson's ideas of future technology and society.
